Abstract
In modern society, one-third of our lives is spent in the period of old age. In this age of aging, elder alienation has become a real social problem. It’s very important that we recover the self-esteem of the elderly and prepare them for the upcoming loneliness of old age. Art (διδασκαλιον) education is a great way to combat old age problems. It gives elders a sense of accomplishment and preserves their mental stability, while building resolution skills through cognitive thinking as they analyze personal conflicts and explore the inner world of their conscious, unconscious, and subconscious minds. The theory behind this study is Rogers' person-centered art therapy. Person-centered art therapy presupposes that a person has the tendency of self-actualization and assumes that he can actively construct his own life. The purpose of this study is to encourage the elderly with the value of self-development through art education, overcoming solitude, developing a conscious state of cooperation, restoring self-esteem, and understanding the values of sharing. The research method is to educate people in their late 50’s who live in New York City. Classes are held regularly for at least 10 months – once a week for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Through art education, we pursue whole-person development and form a positive self-concept so that we can live our lives proactively. The most significant change in art education was the view of surrounding objects. The daily view of the sky, flowers, trees, birds, and perspective has changed. I was able to observe things around me and to discover the new joy of life. I was confident that I was able to collaborate with others with a feeling of accomplishment when I completed a work. Self-esteem was improved by obtaining the attitude of a positive life while presenting finished work of oneself. I was able to get a positive effect by moving away from loneliness while interacting directly with other people in the same classroom, or even outside of class, through SNS. We should change our attitudes toward a positive life filled with high self-esteem by returning to service and by seeing others through our own experiences of life that has been acknowledged rather than resist and deny old age. If the church can refine the psychological sentiments of its members and residents through art education, it will contribute more to practicing God's love. Based on the results of this study and Carl Rogers' human centered art therapy, I suggest the research and discussion about the creative art education of the elderly considering individual characteristics.
